LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Proper registration of street vendors vital

Editor — Registration of street vendors has been long overdue. There has been a lot of politics around this. Many cities globally have some form of vending and that includes New York but there are rules.

The local authorities need to identify areas where people can sell their wares and where it is safe and convenient for people to buy. Proper sanitary facilities have to be installed, built or erected and all vending has to be properly registered to enable accountability.

This is not the case particularly in Harare. People do as they please and that certainly has to stop. We need not wait for a crisis of the nature we are confronted with for us to act.

We have a similar scenario in other sectors such as public passenger transport where kombis and mushikashika operate in an disorderly manner. They drive against the flow of traffic and shoot past red traffic lights with impunity.

Containing the cholera outbreak becomes a problem because of this disorder. We need to join hands to bring sanity into our city.
