Liberation war hero Cde Robert ‘Kwekwele’ Gumbo, who died this week, was laid to rest this afternoon at his farm in Odzi.
Speaker after speaker hailed the contribution made by Cde Gumbo in fighting
for the liberation of the country.
He was also described as a dedicated ZANU PF member who served in various portfolios with distinction.
Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Advocate Misheck Mugadza said Cde Gumbo sacrificed his life for thousands of citizens to benefit from the land reform programme.
“Cdes and Friends, we lay down today a man who made immense sacrifices for the liberation of this country, a man who was prepared to pay the ultimate for our heritage, our land.
“Cde Gumbo not only fought for the worthy cause to liberate our country, but was an active advocate of the Third Chimurenga, setting the path for hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans to reclaim their land through the fast-track land reform programme, which he championed with passion and assisted in the pegging of land for many people in the province,” said Minister Mugadza.
Family spokesperson and son Mr Arnold Gumbo said the family has been robbed of a pillar of strength.
“As a family we are sadnned by the loss of our father. He was always there for us despite his busy schedule in politics. We will dearly miss him,” said Mr Gumbo.
Notable figures who attended the funeral include Rtd Lt General Mike Nyambuya who is the Deputy President of Senate and, ZANU PF Politburo member, Central Committee member Cde Shadreck Chipanga, ZANU PF Manicaland Provincial Chairman Cde Tawanda Mukodza, provincial members and war veterans, among others.
Cde Gumbo is famous for helping the late former President Cde Robert Mugabe and Cde Edgar Tekere to cross into Mozambique.
