LIBERATION war hero Cde Nathaniel Moyo has died and was yesterday buried at the Bulawayo Provincial Heroes Acre in Nkulumane. Cde Moyo died at Mayfair Hospital in South Africa after succumbing to cancer. He was 71. In an interview, family spokesperson Cde Pilate Dube said his uncle was a good man who was passionate about the liberation struggle.
“We have lost a good brother, family man and a leader who was a unifier and a role model to the young stars. He was passionate about the history of our country and always reminded us to treasure the independence which did not come easily,” said Cde Dube, also a war veteran.
War veterans provincial administrator for Bulawayo Cde Bornfas Ndlovu also described Moyo as a leader who had inspired a lot of war veterans.
“We are saddened by the loss of our friend and brother who was a pillar of strength for many of us. He was passionate about the liberation struggle and was quick to remind us of where we are coming from,” said Cde Ndlovu.
Cde Moyo was born on 7 June in 1942 at Mayezane, Wenlock area in Gwanda district.
He was born in a family of 11 and did his primary education at Mayezane Primary School from Sub-A to standard three.
He then went to Mopane Primary School where he completed his primary school before proceeding to Inyathi Secondary School and later to Matopo Mission where he completed his studies.
Cde Moyo left for Bulawayo in search of a job and worked for Supersonic until he joined the liberation struggle in 1975 when he crossed into Botswana.
In 1977 he was selected to go to Zambia where he was taken to Namapundwe transit camp.
From Namapundwe he was sent to Mboma Camp in Angola for military training where he became one of the experts of the 75mm gun in the artillery division.
Cde Moyo came back into the country during the ceasefire and assembled at Gwayi River Mine. He was active in the land reform programme.
Cde Moyo is survived by wife Ms Florence Nyathi and two children.
Meanwhile, another war veteran, Cde James Sibanda died in an accident last week and was buried at the Bulawayo Provincial Heroes Acre on Saturday.
Cde Sibanda was serving in the Zimbabwe National Army and was based at 1;1 Infantry Battalion.
