He described him as a hardworking and selfless cadre.
“Cde Nkomo was a dedicated cadre who worked hard for the liberation of the country. He was a sociable person, who loved people and worked tirelessly for them,” said Rtd Maj Sibanda.
He said Cde Nkomo would be buried today at the Bulawayo Provincial Heroes Acre in Nkulumane.
“There will be a church service at 8am at his home in Nkulumane 5 and then people will proceed to the Heroes Acre,” said Rtd Maj Sibanda.
Cde Nkomo was born on 4 April 1952 at Hobodo in Mangwe District and did his primary education at Hobodo Primary School.
In 1969 he was employed at International Hotel in Bulawayo and the following year left for South Africa where he worked for a while.
He then joined the armed struggle in Zambia via Botswana.
In Zambia he was taken to Mboroma Camp before being transferred to Morogoro Camp in Tanzania.
In 1976 he was sent to Russia for further military training.
After completing his training in Russia, Cde Nkomo and other combatants returned to Zambia in 1977 from where they were deployed to the front.
He operated in Matabeleland North around the Lupane and Binga districts as the deputy regional commander.
During the ceasefire he moved into Mike Assembly Point at St Paul in Lupane.
He was demobilised in 1981.
Cde Nkomo is survived by a wife, six children and two grandchildren.
Mourners are gathered at House Number 1140 Nkulumane 5.
