Liberian president signs small arms commission

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who on Thursday evening signed the act into law at a ceremony here, described the event as another milestone in Liberia’s desire to embrace peace, national stability and democracy within the country’s borders and the sub- region.
She said small arms and light weapons pose a threat to peace and stability not only in Liberia but also the African Continent and the world at large, adding small arms and light weapons kill more people than conventional weapons. 
Sirleaf observed that small arms and light weapons facilitate rebel movements and other destabilising factors, and called for collaboration in putting an end to the danger posed through their movements.
“Liberia is a living witness to the threat posed by small arms and light weapons. In fact countries of the Mano River Union have all experienced the destructive effects of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons,” the Liberian leader emphasised. — Xinhua.
