VETERAN defender, Brighton Tuwaya, has surfaced at Shamva Mine FC, who are among the favourites to win the ZIFA Northern Region Division One League this season.
The 40-year-old made his Premiership debut 19 years ago, with the now defunct Lancashire Steel. He spent the past two seasons as skipper of PSL new boys, Simba Bhora.
One would have thought that new coach, Tonderai Ndiraya, was going to accommodate the ageless defender, just for a season.
Club president, Simba Ndoro, had also attempted to bail out Tuwaya by promising to create a role, within the club, for the defender.
Tuwaya said there was no bad blood between him and Ndoro.
“I still have a good relationship with Ndoro, nothing has really changed except that I have left Simba Bhora,” said Tuwaya.
“I felt like I could still play just for a season then I will call it a day.
“I’m now at Shamva Mine, but if I’m offered the opportunity to join Simba Bhora after retirement, I will grab it with both hands.”
Tuwaya insisted that he is not going to put himself under pressure to win the championship.
“This is a challenge for me, and the best I can hope for at the moment is to stay injury-free because I have never experienced a career-threatening injury.
“We are still training and to say we are here to win the championship might be too early for us.
“But, maybe, our first five games will give us a better picture of where we are.
“However, our primary target is to avoid relegation,” he said.
