Lifeline for City Rovers

THE gap between Zifa Eastern Region Division One log leaders, Hartley Academy and second placed, Mutare City Rovers has been reduced to just one point with the same number of games played after Hartley suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Melfort on Wednesday afternoon.

Hartley had a chance to extend their lead at the summit of the log table when they played their game in hand against Melfort on Wednesday, but they had their tails tucked between their legs after the referee blew the final whistle, nursing a painful 0-2 defeat that could derail their quest for the title.

Hartley now have 61 points, while Mutare City Rovers’ tally is 60.

Third placed Masvingo United have amassed 58 points.

It is game on in the fight for the sole Premiership promotional ticket, with Hartley travelling to Chipinge for a tricky date against unpredictable Gaza Gunners this weekend, while Rovers host Melfort at Sakubva Stadium.

Given that among the remaining matches of the season, Hartley will travel to Mutare for a potential title decider against Mutare City Rovers at Sakubva Stadium, Magusha, as City Rovers are affectionately known, have every reason to see light at the end of the tunnel.

However, the Mutare outfit would need to strictly guard against complacency and inconsistency in the remaining must-win fixtures if they entertain hopes of playing in the top flight league.

Over the years, Mutare City Rovers have perfected the art of raising hopes of Premiership promotion for their fans, only to falter where it matters most.

Considering that Dongo Sawmills has already been relegated, while Buffaloes face real danger of being relegated, promotion of City Rovers might be just what the doctor ordered for football in Manicaland.
