ROMAN Catholic Mutare Diocese Bishop, Bishop Alexio Muchabaiwa ordained a new Diocesan priest recently at St Theresa Chiduku Mission in Rusape.

Reverend Father Nyahumbi became one of the five Diocesan priests to be ordained in different parts of Manicaland this year.

The colourful ordination was attended by several Roman Catholic priest and jubilant Catholics, some of whom travelled from Mutare.

Ordination is a sacramental ceremony in which a deacon becomes a priest.

In his homely to the new priest, Rev Fr Muhumba emphasised that the new priest should have humility so that he can preach the word of God to the poor.

“Even if parishioners praise you, don’t forget your priestly role and remain genuine,” he said.

Rev Fr Muhumba said Rev Fr Nyahumbi should preach the gospel whether he has time or not.

“You are not married, even if one comes in the middle of the night asking to go to the hospital take your car and go with them.”

He also encouraged him to keep on praying for the Holy Spirit to guide him.

On what inspired him to be a priest, Rev Fr Nyahumbi said: “I grew up as a devoted member of the Catholic Church and was so passionate about the gospel of Christ. I felt I had a calling to be a priest. Growing up and watching other congregants in out stations going for weeks without mass pushed me to be a priest so as to fill the gap.”

Rev Fr Nyahumbi encouraged youth from the church who wish to take up priesthood or sisterhood to do so because the Bible says in Luke 10:2: “…. and the harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few, therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.”

Relatives and friends were delighted with the ordination of their loved one who had overcome the challenges of the road to priesthood.

His parents urged him to be steadfast in his prayers.

The other diocesans priests who were ordained this year were Rev Fr Abramah Nyamupachitu Nemaisa of St Barbra’s Manyika Parish, Rev Fr Cletos Mavango, Triashill Mission, Rev Fr Thomas Mandeya, Regina Coeli Parish, Rev Fr Brighton Mazinyani, St Peters Checheche Parish.
