Lightning strike claims 3 lives in Rusape

THREE people were struck and killed by lightning in Rusape since the beginning of the rain season.

Rusape district police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Muzondiwa Clean said the three victims were from Domborembizi Village, Zimati Farm and Nyavanhu Village in Makoni. He added that the latest victim was Editor Mamvura (20) of Nyavanhu Village, under Chief Tandi. He was struck while listening to music on his cell phone with earphones plugged on.

“On December 17, 2015 Editor Mamvura, of Nyavanhu Village, under Chief Tandi was in a kitchen hut with his mother Dorcas when it was about to rain. He was playing music on his cell phone with earphones plugged on. When he was about 15 meters from the hut, he was then struck by the lightning and died on the spot,” said Asst Insp Clean.

He urged members of the public to observe basic precautionary measures when it is raining to avoid being struck.

“We urge people to take precautionary measures whenever it is raining such as avoid being the tallest object, not seeking shelter under trees, disconnect electrical gadgets among others,” he said.
