A drunk driver was found to be nine times over the legal limit for alcohol after a patrol caught them driving ‘erratically’ in Limerick yesterday evening.
An Ireland-based Zimbabwean motorist – Masimba Charles Muwand- was pulled over by a Garda patrol and now faces a hefty punishment after a shocking breathalyser test.
He was driving a Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
Results showed 91mg of alcohol in the motorist’s system – over nine times the maximum safe level.
Limerick Gardaí highlighted the incident on social media and said: “We were on patrol in Limerick City last when we saw this car driving erratically.
“They were stopped and the driver failed a roadside breath test, where it was found that they were nine times over the limit and were the subject of a warrant. They were arrested, court to follow.”
We were contacted by Garda officials who confirmed the driver to be Muwand, who is originally from Zimbabwe.
Gardaí arrested Muwand on the spot. The driver is said to have claimed to be on antibiotic medication.
Motorists found to be multiple times over the limit for alcohol are likely to face severe penalties, including a fine of up to €5,000 and/or 6 months in prison. All drink driving offences automatically result in a ban from driving for at least 3 months.
They’ll also have to deal with a nasty increase to their insurance premiums, as drivers with a conviction can face penalties for years.
This incident happened just hours after the end of National Slow Down Day where a total of 1,286 motorists were clocked travelling above the speed limit nationwide. The worst offender was also in Limerick, where the driver was caught travelling at 166km/h in a 100km/h zone.
There have been similar incidents in Cork, including one bad actor who was caught back in February driving five times over the alcohol limit at a routine afternoon checkpoint in Bandon.-corkbeo.ie
