THE Bulawayo Athletics Board is looking to wrap up the 2018 athletics calendar on a high note with a seamless Liquor Hub 10KM Fun Run scheduled for 16 December in the city.
The sponsors of the annual race, now in its fourth year, Liquor Hub Wholesalers have set aside a budget of R50 000.
“It’s been a good year for Bulawayo athletics as we have managed to retain all the sponsors for our flagships races such as PPC, Old Mutual and now Liquor Hub so it’s only befitting that we end the year on a high with the last event in December,” said Bulawayo Athletics Board chairman Manuel Mpofu.
PPC, the giant cement producers, bankrolls the Matopos 33 Miller while Old Mutual sponsors the Nkulumane Half Marathon. Both races have been running for years now.
Winners in the senior men and women’s categories are taking home R5 000 each, second-placed athletes in both categories will get R3 000 with the third positions runners walking away with R2 000.
The top three in the junior men and women’s categories will get R1 500, R1 000 and R500 respectively. The top two in both male and female wheel section will walk away with R2 000 and R1 500 respectively.
Athletics clubs, schools and companies are invited for the race, whose proceeds from registration fees are donated to charities in the Matabeleland region.
Registration fees are $5 for seniors, $3 for juniors and $2 for charity the charity walk and can be made via mobile money transfers and cash.
Physical registration is ongoing at Liquor Hub in the city centre.
Last year, Jacob Mugomeri came first in the senior men’s section ahead of Blessing Waison of Black Rhinos and Blanket Mine’s Christopher Gondwe.
In the women’s category Patience Garauzive of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services came first followed by Neviah Maganzo also of ZPCS and Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Annie Chirisa.
