WHAT was meant to be a peaceful evening drive turned deadly when a young Bulawayo couple lost their lives in a gruesome crash near Insukamini Primary School on Nketa Drive.
The victims, identified as Bekithemba Tshuma (35) of Entumbane and his wife Lorrine Tsvangirai (25), died on the spot after the white Toyota Corolla they were travelling in veered off the road and slammed into a tree.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed the fatal accident.
“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident that occurred along Nketa Drive, near Insukamini Primary School in Bulawayo, where a couple died after the driver, the husband, who was driving a Toyota Corolla, lost control of the vehicle and rammed onto a tree on the roadside,” she said.
Both victims suffered severe head injuries.
“They were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies have been taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary,” Inspector Msebele added.
Social media has since been flooded with messages of shock and condolence as the community reels from the sudden loss.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving, especially at night and along residential roads.
“Drivers must stay alert and adhere to speed limits. Lives are being lost unnecessarily,” said Inspector Msebele.
The tragic crash has cast a dark cloud over Entumbane and reignited calls for more road safety awareness in the city.
