Litmus test for City Rovers

Sports Reporter
INCONSISTENT Mutare City Rovers’ Premiership promotion credentials will once again come under severe scrutiny when they clash with fellow title chasing Masvingo City Dortmund at Sakubva Stadium tomorrow.

What makes Mutare City Rovers’ match against Masvingo City Dortmund potentially intriguing is that the winner has a fair chance of jumping to the apex of the Eastern Region Division One league log standings.

Masvingo City Dortmund, just like their neighbours, Masvingo United are in a quest to reclaim a Premiership slot for the country’s oldest city.

Masvingo has been without a resident Premiership side for years and the zeal to have a team in the top-flight league is now evident in the efforts being undertaken by the two teams in Eastern Region Division One.

Mutare City Rovers and Masvingo City Dortmund are both tied on 21 points, just a single point behind log leaders, Prime Rangers who have amassed 22 point after 11 rounds of league matches.

It promises to be a tightly contested race for Premiership promotion in the Eastern Region given that Masvingo United, Hartley Academy and Mutoko Pirate are the other three teams that also have 21 points on the latest log standings.

Mutare City Rovers have openly declared their ambition to earn promotion into the top-flight league, but just like in their recent campaigns, inconsistency has been their Achilles’ heel.

It was two points dropped than a point gained when Magusha, as City Rovers are known, settled for a morale sapping one-all stalemate with Mutare correctional services outfit Tenax at Sakubva last Sunday.

Their fans recently lost patience with the team’s technical department and openly showed their discontent through the manhandling of coach, Kenny ‘Bokande’ Kachara.

Interestingly, some sections within the City Rovers’ camp are now calling for the reinstatement of Lyndon Kanyemba, who was relieved of his duties in the technical department after last year’s failed Premiership promotion attempt.
