Livestock genetic improvement drive intensified

GOVERNMENT has intensified efforts to expand Zimbabwe’s national cattle herd to six million by 2030 through an enhanced livestock genetic improvement programme aimed at increasing productivity, resilience and quality across the beef sector.

The programme has seen Government capacitating research institutions to support artificial insemination and structured breeding systems for smallholder farmers, with a focus on indigenous and adapted breeds such as Tuli, Mashona and Nkone, which are valued for their fertility, resilience and ability to withstand harsh climatic conditions.

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to improve livestock performance, reduce mortality rates and enhance beef production efficiency as Zimbabwe advances towards a more competitive and climate-smart agricultural sector.

Speaking at the Zvikomborero Farms National Victory Field Day in Featherstone, recently, where the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society (ZAS) presented its 2025 livestock season award, Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development Dr Anxious Masuka said livestock genetic improvement was central to rebuilding the national herd and strengthening the beef value chain.

“This victory is not simply the result of exhibiting an exceptional animal; it reflects years of strategic investment, disciplined management, sound genetics and an unwavering commitment to excellence,” he said.

Receiving the award, Zvikomborero Farms director Dr Divine Simbi-Ndhlukula said the recognition reflected team-work, discipline and sustained investment in quality livestock production.

“I am humbled to have received this award. It is a sign that, as women, we are no longer just helpers but are now key drivers in the agricultural sector.”
