Living with fear as a driver

Itai Chipunza

PEOPLE are generally inclined towards preserving their lives, property and loved ones. We generally want to protect things we have and the people around us. It’s normal. It’s actually being responsible to behave in this manner. When someone does not behave like this it is actually treated as a mental illness. However, with many it is more than just being responsible. Many people today live with fear as a driver for most decisions they have made.

Think about it for a while, the reason they went to the witch doctor was fear of something bad happening, reasons why they jump when that same witch doctor makes demands, is out of fear of things that could happen, reasons why they have not started that project that is in their hearts is fear of failure, fear of going hungry a few months before it takes off. The reason why you go to that underpaying job yet you have an option that needs you to work harder for better income is fear of what people will say if you fail. The examples are too many. People are afraid of countless things.

The first problem with fear is that it is not of God.

2 Timothy 1 verse 7

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but  (He has given us the spirit) of power and love and of calm and well balanced mind and discipline and self control.

Cowardice is defined simply as lack of bravery, craven means lack of bravery. Cringing is bending in fear or oppression. The definitions speak for themselves. They all point to fear. God has not given us reasons to fear. This means when you feel afraid to do things that God has assured you are within you sphere of abilities, this is not from God. And we all know, if it’s not from God, there is a good chance it is from the devil. Fear of stepping out to greatness is from the devil. Instead what is from God is power. Power is the ability or capability to do something. Simply put, God has given you the ability and capability to chase after the highest level of your gifting and attain it.

If you are a musician, imagine the biggest musician you know. You are able to be like him. God has given you the power to do it. He never said it would be a landslide mission, he said you can attain it. So why not start today? He goes on to say, he has given us a spirit of calmness, balanced mind, discipline and self-control. All these are attributes placed within you by God to help you attain the best of your abilities. A calm person who also possesses a balanced mind thinks clearly and their thoughts are not shadowed by what his or her feelings may be. This type of person stays focused on the main goal. Its paramount they do, the world is a pool of destructions. Discipline keeps you in the right place, at the right time and doing the right thing. Discipline gives good conduct. You may be working to be a bodybuilder, but discipline will tell you steroids are not the way. God has equipped you to be a great person. The problem is you do not know.

2 Kings 6 verse 17

Then Elisha prayed, “O God, open his eyes and let him see,” the eyes of the young man were opened and he saw. A wonder! The whole mountain side full of horses and chariots of fire surrounding Elisha.

This must have been a day full of mixed feelings for Elisha’s servant. First, he experiences chilling fear when he sees an entire army hunting his master. An army is not a small thing, after all nations are protected by armies. Just a few seconds later, he sees an even bigger army that is on their side. This must have been a deep relief. But this shows how little we know of things around us. Do you know that as you read this, around you could be angels of God. Standing guard over you and waiting for your command to function.

If you waste time focusing on what could go wrong, you become blinded to things that could go right. If you think about it nothing is possible. It does not make sense for a boy who grew up in one of Bulawayo’s poorest neighbourhoods to grow up and lead the planting of one thousand churches. But this is this the story of Bishop Colin Nyathi of Harvest House International. But if he sat down to think of how he could potentially fail that would have been the first failure in itself. Gather your mind, be courageous, work hard, work smart, pray and by all means, trust in God. This is all that is required of you.  Be blessed as you work hard this year.
