Popular local design label “Totem Pride” scooped an award for Best Visual Arts Fashion Designer of the Year at the just ended Zimbabwe Music and Arts Awards held in the United Kingdom.

The awards recognised locals in the Diaspora and Zimbabwe for their achievements in specific areas.

In an interview with Herald Entertainment, one of Totem Pride’s designers, Simbarashe Nyambara who is based in Zimbabwe, said they owed their success to God.

“It is true that we started from the bottom and we have managed to conquer. We would like to thank all our customers, supporters, friends and family who nominated and voted for us,” he said.

He said winning the ZIMAA Award was a dream come true for them.

“It definitely means a great deal to us because all the hard work and passion we continue to put into this brand has paid off. We felt humble and honoured,” he said.

He said their designs had reached many countries and many celebrities appreciated the label.

“It was high time we won this award considering how our label has conquered the world,” he said.

“Afro-centric art inspires us and this is the same spirit that we are trying to exude by virtue of being Africans in a global world,” he said.

The talented designer said they chose to christen their designs Totem Pride because of their desire to promote traditional culture.

“We chose Totem Pride because we want to restore the pride in our roots and totems in a unique way that blends with current fashion trends of the day,” he said.

He said their aim was to create something unique with much substance and identity.

He cited brand expansion as a major challenge. The label is the brainchild of his brother, Thauzeni, who is based in the United Kingdom.
