The Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing has taken over ownership of Quality International Hotel that Government bought to be used as accommodation for Members of Parliament.
The ministry is now expected to renovate the hotel that has been empty for more than five years since it was bought for Parliament to accommodate MPs.
Clerk of Parliament Mr Kennedy Chokuda confirmed the development last week, saying Parliament was no longer in charge of the hotel.
“The Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing has made arrangements for a private developer to renovate the hotel so that they can run it on commercial basis,” said Mr Chokuda.
“So, Parliament will be using it just like other hotels that we lease.
“The hotel will not be under Parliament, but the Ministry of Local Government.”
It is expected that the new Parliament Building that China will build for Zimbabwe will bring an end to the accommodation problems.
All things being equal, construction of the new building with capacity to hold 500 MPs is expected to start this year once baseline and architectural studies are completed and the tender is flighted in China.
