participants from across the continent expected to battle it out in two age groups – Under-16 and Under-14 for both boys and girls.
The six players – Courtney Lock and Alwyn Mushonga (boys’ Under-16), Tadiwa Chinamo and Keith Mwashita (boys’ Under-14 ), Keren Muswere and Karen Muswere (girls’ Under-14) – were part of the 11 players who took part in the Zonal competition in Namibia last month.
Tennis Zimbabwe administrator, Cliff Nhokwara, said they have received confirmation from the ITF and preparations will begin this month.
“We are starting preparations this month and we are going to have some tournaments in March. A week before the championships start we will start the tournaments.
“We proposed for a Super Eight in March to be hosted by Harare and that was part of the arrangements to have time to prepare and proper match time.
“Unfortunately, no one qualified in the girls’ Under-16 but we have applied for consideration for the wild card,” said Nhokwara.
Nhokwara said in the event that they get the wild card they will select other players who did not participate in the Zonals.
“We cannot give those that participated in the Zonals because they already failed. They got their opportunity so we are going to give it to the top two players but we will only get to know the ITF’s decision mid-February,” said Nhokwara.
The TZ administrator said they were looking forward to the young players qualifying for the Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup.
“The competition has changed a little bit in that it used to have three age groups – the Under-18, 16 and 14 but they are only going to have two age groups.
