Zimbabwe’s motor vehicle industry is poised for a significant boost, with key stakeholders and Government officials laying out ambitious plans to bolster local production and reduce dependency on imported vehicles.
The African Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM), in collaboration with local firms, has expressed interest in revitalising the country’s motor industry.
Mr Dave Coffey, AAAM chief executive officer, emphasised the potential for growth despite current challenges, affirming their goal to harmonise resources for the development of Zimbabwe’s car value chains.
During a meeting with Government representatives last week, the delegation highlighted the need for strategic investments and joint ventures to foster long-term gains.
“Remember our goal is to harmonise resources for the growth of the car value chains across the nation and it is our firm belief that the current developments will further enable us to focus on long-term gains while creating a platform to unlock value while facilitating growth and recovery.
“Our recommendations will help authorities formulate concrete plans to facilitate sector growth,” Mr Coffey stated, underlining their commitment to unlocking new opportunities within Zimbabwe’s automotive sector.
Government support for this initiative has been robust, with Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu expressing optimism about the industry’s potential for resurgence.
“The presence of this delegation signals regional confidence and underscores our commitment to revitalising the entire value chain,” Minister Ndlovu affirmed.
Official data underscores the urgency of these efforts, given the country’s status as a net importer of vehicles due to limited domestic manufacturing capacity.
Parallel efforts led by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion further underscore Zimbabwe’s commitment to industrial revitalisation.
Minister Ncube highlighted incentives aimed at supporting local assembly plants and reducing import dependencies.
“We have introduced duty-free importation of knockdown kits to spur local assembly and create jobs,” he explained, emphasising the strategic importance of the measures in driving economic transformation.
Moreover, the Government’s broader strategy includes incentives to promote greener technologies and support a sustainable economy.
Initiatives such as removing the value-added tax on liquified petroleum gas and reducing import duties on electric vehicles (EVs) aim to alleviate household burdens and foster a transition towards eco-friendly transportation options.
“These policies align with global trends towards sustainability and economic resilience,” Minister Ncube noted, highlighting the country’s proactive stance in embracing greener technologies.
Local industry leaders, including Mr Lawrence Nyamushanya of the Motor Industry Association of Zimbabwe, expressed optimism about the delegation’s visit and its potential impact on local manufacturers.
“We anticipate valuable exchanges that will unlock new avenues for growth despite past challenges,” Mr Nyamushanya remarked, reflecting industry hopes for a revitalised automotive sector.
Efforts to revive the country’s motor vehicle industry come at a critical juncture, where the convergence of private sector initiatives and Government support promises to reinvigorate economic sectors adversely affected by import dependencies.
