BULAWAYO DJs and musicians have resolved to talk less, work hard and be united towards improving the music industry. Bulawayo Musicians Association (BMA) on Friday engaged local club DJs to find out why their music was not being played in night clubs during their sessions.
The meeting at Mhlahlandlela Government Complex was attended by 20 artistes and DJs.
DJ Mphoe, who attended the meeting, bemoaned the lack of unity on both camps saying a lot of work needed to be done by both parties.
He said the meeting on Friday left them with more questions than answers.
“What I deduced from the meeting on Friday is that there is a lot that needs to be done on the ground. They were focusing on things that will not help the music industry and there is a lot of bickering among both parties,” said DJ Mphoe.
He said there was no unity in the Bulawayo music industry.
“Musicians and DJs are not united in Bulawayo. No one seems to want to learn from anyone. Musicians do not want constructive criticism. On the other hand, some of us have personal issues with musicians. We need to fix that problem fast,” said DJ Mphoe.
However, Bulawayo Musicians Association spokesperson Dalvin “2Dope” Makhalisa said the meeting went on well and it was an eye opener.
He said some DJs were not playing their music because they were not giving it to them.
“The DJs said we were not submitting our stuff to them. We therefore came up with a central distribution point where any artiste can leave their music and every Wednesday local DJs can come and sample what is there,” said 2Dope.
He said issues to do with quality of music also popped up with musicians promising that they would improve their products.
“The DJs are adamant about quality. They will not play substandard music and we are going to address that as artistes,” said 2Dope.
He said they had taken the DJs’ advice to produce music that is relevant to society.
