Local tennis players disappoint

who reached the quarter-finals, Ronzai Saurombe bowed out of the tournament when he lost to Namibia’s Tuki Jacobs yesterday. Jacobs won 7-6 (3), 6-3 to progress to the last four. He will clash with Karan Salwan of India.
Saurombe, however, said he was happy with his performance arguing that he had not had proper practice in the build-up to the competition.
“The guy played very well. I think I had a tough match yesterday (Wednesday), I played three sets and I think my body was a bit tired.
“I wasn’t practising everyday so I am actually happy with the results because making it to the quarter-finals without playing everyday is not easy,” said Saurombe. The 16-year-old said he hopes to put up a better show in the second leg of the tournament starting next week at the same venue.
“I just want to recover, get my body to rest for next week and be fresh,” said Saurombe. In the other matches yesterday, top seed Mathew Rossouw overpowered Ismael Mzai 6-4, 6-2 and will take on Francois Kellerman in today’s semi-final. In the girls’ category, number one seed, Rutuja Bhosale, defeated Liniques Theron 6-3, 6-4 to set a semi-final date with Nayanika Devireddy.
Devireddy eased past Janet Koch winning 6-3, 6-2. Nelise Verster overpowered Spurt Shivalingaiah 6-2, 6-4 to book a semi-final date against Lesedi Jacobs who beat Huibre-Mare Botes 6-3, 6-2.
The doubles matches saw the Zimbabwe duo of Tendai Tapfuma and Courtney Lock beating Francois Kellerman and Okkie Kellerman 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals and they will play against the pair of Guy Orly Iradukunda and Andriatokiana Ratsinandresy. The other semi-final match will feature William Bushamuka and Ismael Mzai who will clash with Philip Bruyn and Mathew Rossouw.
There will be no place for the Zimbabwean girls in the semi-finals after Devireddy and Shivalingaiah combined to dismiss Nicole Dzenga and Vimbai Ugaro 6-3, 7-6 while Rutuja Bhosale and Melissa Laing outclassed Thabile Tshatedi and her South African partner 6-2, 6-2.
