RECENT police investigations have uncovered a concerning trend that some locals are being used as agents for distributing drugs smuggled into Zimbabwe through illegal entry points by peddlers from neighbouring countries.

This revelation follows the recent arrests of three transporters and 11 drug dealers who were found in possession of unregistered medicines valued at thousands of dollars.

The suspects include: Justice Nyika (42), Prosper Maphosa (37), Clarence Ncube (27), Brenda Sango (35), Rumbidzai Chinyamakobvu (38), Melany Gutsire (39), Tafadzwa Makwarimba (36), Charles Kakomwe (34), Rufaro Munyanyi (42), Ephiphania Norest Moyo (43), Beauty Madamombe (52), Mascline Dziva (47), Portia Chimombe (38) and Tambudzai Shoko (37).

They were apprehended after police received intelligence about a rigid truck, registration number AFG 3713, travelling from Bulawayo to Chinhoyi that was suspected to be carrying drugs.

The truck was intercepted in Murombedzi, Zvimba, resulting in the arrests of the driver, Justice Nyika, and his two assistants, Prosper Maphosa and Clarence Ncube.

Upon interrogation, the driver and his assistants implicated the other 11 suspects, leading to their subsequent arrests in Braeside, Harare.

Investigations revealed that the 11 were recipients of the drug consignment, which included: 815 boxes of Broncleer Cough Syrup, 77 boxes of Benlyin Cough Syrup, 162 boxes of Adeo Salteryn Cough Syrup and 44 boxes of Astrapane Cough Syrup

In an interview, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the police are committed to combating drug abuse and trafficking.
