ISAAC Logart and Fortunate Chidzivo won the second edition of the Sunshine City Half marathon at the Harare Gardens yesterday.
Kenyan Logart, running under the Mr Pace Athletics Club, crossed the line in 1 hour 13 minutes and 25 seconds to beat Kelvin Pangiso of ZPCS’ 1 hour 13 minutes 42 seconds, in second place in the 21km race.
Godwin Katakura settled for third place, crossing the finish line 59 seconds behind Pangiso to complete the podium.
With five slots walking away with cash prize Tawanda Bvunzawabya was fourth on 1 hour 14 minutes 48 seconds as Elijah Mabhunu was fifth.
In the female class, Chidzivo also of Mr. Pace produced a dominant display touching the ribbon in 1 hour 30 minutes 33 seconds and was more than two minutes ahead of Rudo Mhonderwa who clocked 1 hour 33 minutes 48 seconds, in second place.
Anne Chirisa of ZRP Bulawayo finished in 1 hour 34 minutes 26 seconds to take third place.
There was also competition in the 10 km run while others took part in the 5km walk/run wheelchair racing and Zumba in the annual event which attracted close to 400 participants.
Harare City Council organised the event in partnership with the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe.
Harare City mayor who was the guest of honour Jacob Mafume said they are happy that the races are improving with each passing year.
“Last year it was a learning curve and we are happy that we have seen an improvement in terms of numbers. Last year 61 athletes and this year we had close to 400 athletes. We at Harare City are aligned with sustainability and the UNSDG number 3 which is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. “This second edition of the Half Marathon is one of our ways of contributing towards a healthy nation and increased productivity,” added Mafume.
