Zimbabwe’s ambitious funnyman, Learnmore “Long John” Mwanyenyeka has once again surpassed his expectations as he recently scooped the Savanna Pan African Comic of the year award in a ceremony held last Saturday, at Gold Reef City in South Africa.
Long John, self-proclaimed as “Village Boy”, is the first Zimbabwean to win in the category and has expressed how victory feels like.
“Being the first Zimbabwean to win this award is such an honour because such will open doors for me, and every other Zimbabwean comedian around the world.
“Also this is an inspiration to everyone with a dream, things may look impossible but with hard work they can be turned into reality,” said Long John.
The comedian gave the following account when asked about the worst and best moments in his career.
“Funny enough my worst moment was my first ever Comedy performance at the Simuka Comedy Nights at Book Café. I was booed off stage and a guy tossed a chair on stage while I was performing.
“Well I can say the best moment was last weekend when I won the biggest comedy award in Africa against big names in the African comedy industry. I honestly didn’t see that coming,” he said.
“What was his first comedy-box?”
“I started comedy in high school, I would go in front of students at the assembly and do some jokes,” he said.
“What triggered his humorous side?”
He says: “I remember seeing my grandmother stressing on what we will eat tomorrow, but as soon as she started watching Family Matters, she would laugh like nothing was wrong.
“I said to myself I want to be able to do the same thing. I fell in love with what comedy does to people.”
Long John outshone Uganda’s Anne Kansiime, Nigeria’s Basketmouth, Zambia’s Chingliz and fellow Zimbabwean, Alfred in the Savanna pan African Comic of year award category.
