RHODESIAN forces could more than hold their own with any other forces that might oppose them in this part of the world, the Minister of Defence and External Affairs, Mr Jack Howman, said in a television interview last night.
He was asked to compare Rhodesian forces with those of other African countries. Mr Howman replied that Rhodesian forces compared well with those of any other country in Africa south of the Sahara, other than South Africa.
He said recent terrorist activity was not regarded as an escalation of the fight. It was something the Government had been warned about for some time.
In answer to another question Mr Howman said the Government was “pretty certain” there were terrorist camps in Zambia. Most of the captured terrorist weapons were of Russian and Chinese origin.
Rhodesian weapons compared very favourably with those carried by terrorists although the strength and effectiveness of terrorist weapons had not to be under- estimated.
Terrorist weapons were modern and “really potent” but Rhodesian versions were certainly comparable.
