President Tshombe of Katanga had secret talks with the Federal Prime Minister, Sir Roy Welensky, in Salisbury on Tuesday and returned to Elisabethville by air early yesterday.
He was accompanied by the Katanga Minister of Finance, Mr Kibwe.
Their discussions “covered civilian supplies to Katanga and the continuance of maintenance agreements affecting the Pedicle Road,” according to a Federal Government statement last night.
Tight security surrounded the arrival of the Katanga President and his Minister and the first indications of their visit was a brief Government announcement yesterday. There was no comment from the offices of the Federal Prime Minister.
His unannounced visit to Salisbury this week is the fourth this year.
The first time was at the end of January when he was reported to have met Sir Roy here for talks. It was never disclosed what was discussed. Only Sir Roy’s closest associates in the Cabinet and Government officials concerned knew about his arrival in Salisbury on July 3 when the President was accompanied by the Minister of Finance for Katanga.
