Piers Morgan says he made “an absolutely arse” of himself by asking for Mikel Arteta to be sacked as Arsenal manager last year.
The Talk TV host, who isn’t exactly famous for revising silly opinions (*cough* Cristiano Ronaldo *cough*), admitted he was “completely wrong” about the Spaniard and labelled his pre-season prediction that Tottenham would finish above his beloved Gunners as one of the “worst predictions in history”.
“I was completely wrong about Arteta,” Morgan admitted in his column for The Sun. “More pleasingly, I was also completely wrong about Spurs and Conte. And as we head into another North London derby this Sunday, I’m happy to admit I’ve never been happier to make a predictive arse of myself.”
Following Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham in May last year, which effectively ruled them out of a top four finish, Morgan demanded Arteta get the chop and said handing him a three-year contract extension was “utterly ridiculous” and “a reward for abject failure”.
Seven months on, Arsenal are five points clear at the top of the Premier League – a competition they haven’t won in nearly two decades – and Morgan claims “it’s all down to Arteta”.
“I’m sorry for doubting you, Mikel. You’re the real deal. Keep up the great work,” he added.
Morgan insisted he “wouldn’t swap” any member of Arsenal’s starting XI for a Tottenham player other than Harry Kane, but “that’s only because [Gabriel] Jesus is injured”.
He also predicted “a big Arsenal win” on Sunday and that Tottenham boss Antonio Conte will “throw his touchline toys out of the pram”.
A seemingly safe call, but then again Piers’ predictions haven’t exactly been on the money recently, have they? – Daily Star
