Love: It can be worse than a mine-field

while holding a big bag that resembled a moving house in the other. From a distance she appeared to be on hands-free, yet she was talking all by herself.
The vivacious, short, plump and leggy model cut a pale shadow of her former self.

She resembled a stray dog with her attire telling the story of someone who cared little about their looks. Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but an impregnated and ditched girl has no roof above her head!
Her hair looked like an unweeded garden, with its appearance bearing testimony the owner had been swept in a tide of emotion.

Dimples on her face had lost shape, making her look just like a blind person’s buggage. Wainge mukwende webofu!
According to the receptionist, this was the third time she had called in looking for Jerry and one needed no special glasses to see that all was not well. The round-faced girl had been sent packing from her parental nest.

All this because of a bulge on her tummy. Yakanga yadeuka isisaorereki.
She had been red-carded by those she rightfully belonged to and had nowhere to run.
Each time the receptionist told Jerry that someone was waiting for him, he would wear a lean and hungry look, whispering: “Ah sistren chingomusasai kuti handipo. Chingotsvagai mashoko ekuti aende. Munhu iyeye arikundipa stress over than. Ingoitai kuti abaleke mhani.”

Sheila was shattered. She had run on her sword and even sold her dignity in a moment of weakness.
“Why me? I don’t deserve this. Have I become so bad that Jerry does not want to see me anymore? But he is the one who forced me into this,” the girl said dejectedly though it was too late.
The previous day, Jerry had slipped into the boot of his car and asked a friend to drive away to avoid seeing and talking to her.
It took an elderly guard – who felt sorry for the girl – to tell her that she was being sold bottled smoke.

“Saka tsvarakadenga dzakadai dzinomitiswawo nhai? Oh, I thought she was an intelligent girl all along. So abstinence talk and condom use didn’t work for her,” said an old lady who watched curiously as the girl made her way out.
“Children of today are lost. They have no future.”

Gentle reader, this is what the world of love sometimes turns to when disagreement creeps in.
The world of love has two sides. It can be either chocolate-coated or worse than a minefield.
Makasa akange adya muchokochi.
At times lovers run away, the world just seems to be collapsing around you.

Unplanned pregnancies and general nagging from someone feeling too comfortable are the major culprits.
Every man needs a woman and vice-versa, but wait until someone starts talking about buns in the oven and you start seeing the guys in their rightful colours.
Unozvichekera bazi raugere nekukara mari.
They will take you for a stranger even though they once pledged they can’t live without you.

Men will tell you about going to this and that funeral until you lose hope and the cycle begins all over again. Unotambwa nyowani mudhorobha nevana vazvino.
But some women are squarely to blame for problems that befall them.
They take money as their shephered and are driven by it into trouble. Some women’s penchant for luxury is suicidal.

They give their lovers the weapons for their destruction all in the name of the animal called love which no one, even those of the highest intelligence order, clearly understand.
If a guy offers to fly a girl to a resort town for a week’s stay in the hotel, she does not think about the hidden costs.
“It’s their fault. Some girls want money too much. They think they are wiser than their parents and even run away to spend quality time with men. This is what breeds all these problems. Kukara too much,” Shelter Murombo a florist in Harare told this writer.

She urged members of the fairer sex to think in the long term.
On being told that their girlfriend is pregnant, some guys rejoice. But such guys are few.
The majority starts using tactics which can make even the Bionic Man green with envy.

A good number of boys from the ghetto will go out of their way to dismiss the lover for a woman of easy virtue. Others will secretly find accomodation somewhere and flee.
Havafi vakabata kumeso semwana wegudo.
“Maxwell is not responsible for this. This girl was a bed-hopper. She had a string of boyfriends and it is unfair to force someone to marry such a character. Please, leave him alone and try your luck somewhere,” you hear people saying, even though they used to see the accuser and the accused arm-in-arm before calamity strikes.

A pregnant girlfriend is just like a rabid dog. No one wants to be near it and it can be worse if someone knows something about her former lovers and some other information which presents her in bad light.
Not to be left out are some mothers, who seem to side with their sons whenever that happens.
“I told you a long time ago that my family upholds Christian values. Your dressing is not consistent with those values. Ungatouya zvako uchiti sweta-sweta netirauzi uchiti unoendepi? I simply have no room for you,” some mothers tell off their would-be daughters-in-law.

There are some mothers who will even beat up the hapless girl and throw her belongings over the precast wall telling her to “go and report wherever you want. Kusada kuona munhu akabudirira”.
The time a girl falls pregnant exposes the community you live in for what it really is.

Some people will offer the jilted girl a shoulder to cry on, but proceed to tell whoever cares to listen how loose and too trusting they were to end up in trouble.
There are neighbours who also exploit such situations to spite those they feel do not deserve a better life.
“Your son should never accept that girl. Taking her for a wife is akin to putting bees and flies in the same hive. The girl’s family is disrespectful and that is why her own father ran away from home. Not everyone in her family is married to show how bad these people are,” some people say while pretending to be offering advice.

Even some guys become real devils in trying to evade responsibility.
They beat the lights out of the girls they would have impregnated and accuse the same girls of having so many lovers. Some boys hire thugs to beat up the girl and her parents. Others literally go under. They visit longlost relatives out of town and stay with them until things get better.

As I commit pen to paper gentle reader, there are countless cases of people who are nursing wounds inflicted upon them by men who impregnated them.
Some of the wounds leave emotional scars that will last forever.
