A Bulawayo man was so engrossed with his new love to the extent of neglecting his four children who later turned to the streets.
The children found life on the streets better than the home environment as their stepmother was reportedly abusing them under the nose of Maxwell Kungaza.
Kungaza (41) employed as a fuel attendant a�?deserteda�? his children aged 16, 14, nine and seven when he stopped sending them to school claiming he had no money.
Surprisingly, while his own children did not go to school, everything for his second wifea��s children was going well.
The children later chose to go and stay in the streets as they were also being abused by their stepmother.
Fortunately, sometime in March their aunt, while walking in town, spotted her brothera��s children lying on the street with a number of street children.
She was shocked and phoned Kungaza, but he never answered his phone and then phoned her brothera��s best friend and told him everything.
The following day when she phoned the friend, he started ignoring her calls just like her brother.
She then made a report to the police and they proceeded to the street childrena��s corner where they found Kungazaa��s children.
Kungaza was therefore arrested on child negligence charges.
He appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Lungile Ncube and pleaded not guilty citing that the children just ran away from home and they stopped going to school at a time when he was not working.
However, the magistrate never bought his story saying he should have sold his car to raise fees for the childrena��s upkeep.
During trial it also came out that the childrena��s mother left them with their father when she moved to Botswana.
Kungaza was remanded out of custody to 24 April for sentencing.
