Without going ahead with the lyrics of Michael Jacksona��s song some of whose words go like, a�? skin head, dead head . . .a�?A� Lupane State University students taking part at the ongoing Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union championship (ZTSU),A� allege ill- treatment from the institution.
a�?We play on empty stomachs,a�? said one student alleging that he heard that the bursar refused to disburse funds.
The students have even told their parents.
a�?It pains us as parents to double-fork from our pockets for students to go and take part in sports when already we have paid the fees which include sports fees in full,a�?A� fumed a parent Mandla Tshuma.
Another parent who spoke on condition of anonymity indicated the situation was going to seriously impact the studenta��s performances.
a�?We would have liked a situation where we witness our own children playing in the CUCSA games but with this situation, none of our children will be selected, because they are playing on empty stomachs,a�? he said.
Co-ordinator of sports at Lupane State University, Jabulani Mpofu, quickly referred this reporter to the Dean of Students only identified as H Ncube who said the issue was because of the cash crunch.
a�?We are faced with a problem of withdrawing money from the bank but hopefully we will rectify the problem. I am also shocked, ita��s already lunch and we are seized with the matter,a�? said Ncube.
ZITSU president Martin Zibwi is on record indicating that they had a policy they adhere to when selecting athletes but with this situation going out of hand, LSU might fail to get an athlete to represent the country in the upcoming Confederation of Universities and Colleges in Southern Africa (CUCSA).
