LUPANE State University (LSU), whose lecturers had threatened to embark on an industrial action and take the institution to court over failure to pay allowances for non-conventional classes, has started paying its lecturers, Sunday News has learnt.

Last week lecturers threatened not to mark examination scripts for the past examination session saying they were not yet paid as per their agreement with the university. The university spokesperson, Mr Zwelithini Dhlamini told the Sunday News on Friday that they had started paying lecturers.

“We have started paying lecturers for the part time classes as of today and it is an ongoing process. However, the marking of scripts is ongoing. In fact the registrar said all was in order in regards to marking,” he said.

Mr Dhlamini said the lecturers had threatened not to mark as a means to have the concerns heard by the university. He, however, could not divulge how many lecturers both part and full time had been affected in terms of not getting payments for the non-conventional classes.

LSU Academic Staff Association Dr Nkululeko Sibanda confirmed that they had started receiving payments.

“Payments have started to come in as per our request, we have it on record that they said they will honour their promise to pay all of our members,” he said.

He said despite the payments flowing in they were not bound to present any marks “now”. Dr Sibanda said the association was not taking lightly any issues to do with the universities contractual agreements with the lecturing staff.
