LISTENING to Pretty Lucy Tshuma , better known as “Lucy Da Poet”, is like stepping into a world where words dance to the rhythm of heartbeats. Her verses are not just spoken — they are lived, breathed and felt, carrying the weight of soul and spirit.

Born and raised in Methodist Village, Bulawayo, Lucy has become one of the city’s most promising poetic voices, blending raw experience with artistry that resonates across borders.

Her recent praise piece dedicated to musician Mzoe 7 has been trending, leaving many curious about the face and fire behind the name Lucy Da Poet.

Speaking to Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Lucy traced her journey. “My love for poetry started in primary school, but working with amaDramatics on Skyz Metro FM shaped my career. Their influence pushed me to explore different styles and themes,” she said.

That foundation has seen her scoop the Praca Award and the Amaqhawanentaba FM Award in South Africa, both recognising her as an outstanding poet. A career highlight came when she collaborated with celebrated poet Obert Dube, on an album — a dream she says felt like destiny.

Lucy’s poetry is rooted in her own story. “My personal life and experiences heavily influence my art. Every poem is a reflection of my emotions, my journey and the people who inspire me,” she said.

But it hasn’t been smooth sailing. She admits the poetry scene is cut-throat. “The biggest challenge is navigating the competitive industry while staying true to my vision. I don’t want to lose my authenticity chasing trends,” she added.

Looking ahead, Lucy is determined to take her voice to the world. “I want to release more albums, collaborate widely and explore live performances and workshops. My art must carry messages of hope, love and resilience. My dream is to inspire future generations to find their voice and tell their own stories,” she said.

From the dusty streets of Methodist Village to award stages in South Africa, Lucy Da Poet is proof that Bulawayo’s artistic heartbeat is alive, proud and global-bound.
