DOMINGO Lunga and Shantel Bhatch were crowned champions of the Bulawayo Metropolitan Body Building Association’s Mr and Miss Western Area 2015 Bodybuilding Championships held at Sizinda Hall on Sunday.
The chairperson of the association, John Mhangwa, said it was a very entertaining contest.
“It was a very entertaining contest and we discovered a lot of athletes with talent in the sport,” he said.
The aim of the competition was to discover talent in the western areas.
“We used the competition for scouting talent from the western areas because there’s a lot of it out there that hasn’t been discovered,” Mhangwa said.
He said the event was meant for new comers in bodybuilding.
“We were targeting mainly the beginners in the industry and from what we saw on Sunday, I believe that Bulawayo has a promising future in the sport,” said Mhangwa as he raised concern over the low turnout of female athletes in the competition.
“I was impressed with the turn out particularly from the men but I’m worried about the disappointing participation from the women’s side.
“We would very much like to see more women participating in the sport. It’s a healthy sport that has many benefits”.
The winners and runners-up of the event are expected to participate in Mr Novies in Harare on Saturday.
A team of six bodybuilders was selected.
