LUPANE Centre is facing a shortage of accommodation for civil servants a move that is delaying Matabeleland North Government departments operating in Bulawayo from relocating to the provincial capital.The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities, Mr David Munyoro, on Thursday toured the civil servants housing project and the Provincial Governor’s house.
In an interview, Mr Munyoro said he came to inspect progress on the projects and ascertain what the Government needed to do to improve the situation.
He said Lupane was developing rapidly hence the need for serious financing of housing development at the centre. “There is a critical housing shortage for civil servants in Lupane and there is a need to allocate more funds in the budget to address the challenge of housing,” said Mr Munyoro.
Mr Munyoro however, said the ministry was unable to complete its projects on time due to funding constraints. “A total of 49 stands were released in 2007 for civil servants and 19 have been developed at the centre. Our thrust is to finish the project and funding is our major limiting factor to their completion,” he said.
