The policeman was seriously injured and is recovering at Mpilo Central Hospital.
He was remanded in custody to 27 September.
Danis David Konson (60), of Number 31 Albans Drive in Parklands was not formally charged with murder, attempted murder and robbery when he appeared before Lupane resident magistrate Mr Takudzwa Gwazemba on Thursday.
He was advised to apply to the High Court for bail.
The court heard that on Monday, Konson was at Mateteni Business Centre in Lupane District when he allegedly shot Siphathisiwe Ncube his ex-girlfriend twice in the head and once on the left thigh using a Bruno pistol. She died on the spot.
Konson had allegedly been ditched by Ncube and she had married another man.
He then allegedly shot Constable Wisdom Matupire, who was in police uniform in the chest.
The State will seek to prove that this was an attempt to eliminate a witness who had seen him shooting and killing Ncube.
Konson allegedly went into Daluzane Investment and allegedly took R300 after he had allegedly threatened to shoot and kill the shop attendant.
He was arrested about six hours after the shooting, at Gwelutshena in Nkayi District.
Mr Sanders Sibanda appeared for the State while Mr Robert Ndlovu, of R Ndlovu and Company represented Konson.
