In a continent often divided by borders, languages, and cultural differences, South African gospel artist Luthando Makaluza is weaving a powerful message of unity through his latest musical offering, “Ujesu Uhamba Nathi” (Jesus Walks With Us).
More than just a song, the track is a spiritual and artistic call for Africans to embrace oneness through faith and music.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Makaluza emphasised that Jesus Christ is the ultimate answer to Africa’s struggles, from xenophobia to tribalism.
“Christ is a symbol of unity, and He is the only answer to our challenges in Africa. If we walk with Him, we will be one and united. Those that live together pray together,” he said.
The track features artists from different African nations, a deliberate move by Makaluza to showcase the beauty of pan-African gospel music. “Working with artists from other parts of our continent was both inspiring and educational. We all have a lot to learn from each other’s backgrounds, experiences, skills, and talents,” he shared.
“The collaboration came about easily because I mix with a lot of people from various countries through faith and music.”

Makaluza strongly believes that music, especially gospel, has the power to bridge divides. “Music in general, including gospel music, does unite us as Africans. It is one of the best channels to convey a good message to different kinds of people,” he explained.
He also noted that African sounds naturally complement each other, making the fusion of different musical styles seamless. “African sounds do relate to one another, and for that reason, it was quite easy to merge them.”
The song’s title carries deep significance, as Makaluza wanted to reaffirm Christ’s presence in the African journey. “The message is to emphasise that He is for us too, as Africans, and we acknowledge that when we follow Him, He walks with us.” For Makaluza, the song is more than just a melody—it’s a divine testimony.
“For me personally, the song is a testimony, for I have seen Him Walk with me (with spiritual eyes), and I felt a need to share it with the world in a way I know best.”
From the musical streets of Gqeberha to studio sessions with South Africa’s gospel royalty, Luthando Makaluza has spent a lifetime weaving together the threads of faith and music. Born and raised in what was formerly Port Elizabeth, Makaluza grew up immersed in gospel sounds, drawing early inspiration from legends like Brenda Fassie, Vuyo Mokoena and Rebecca Malope.
This foundation shaped a remarkable career spanning over a decade—from recording his first demo with Madoda Malotana of Cheek to Cheek fame to collaborating with producers like Master Wakes, France Muncho of Premium Records, and the iconic Sizwe Zako. As a backing vocalist, he’s shared stages and studios with greats including Keke, Kholeka Dubula, Ringo Madlingozi, Vuyo Mokoena and Deborah Fraser.
His behind-the-scenes work as a shepron for Clash of the Choirs further honed his production skills, while his recent formation of a Yeoville community choir through open auditions demonstrates his commitment to nurturing new talent.
Makaluza said the response to “Ujesu Uhamba Nathi” has been overwhelming. “The song is receiving great applause, with its uniting effect obvious,” he said, adding that he plans more pan-African collaborations. From backing vocals to center stage, from local choirs to continental collaborations, Luthando Makaluza’s journey reflects his belief: when Jesus walks with Africa, Africa walks as one.
