MABVUKU RESIDENTS CRY FOUL

Arron Nyamayaro

MABVUKU and Tafara residents say they have been exposed to industrial emissions for a long time and are appealing for help.

They say emissions from a cement plant, located close to their neighbourhood, have been putting a number of their lives at risk.

One resident, close to the plant, said she had to wash her vegetables three times and use vinegar to clean vehicles.

“We know that the cement plant was there before the suburb, but something must be done to protect our health.

“Muriwo watirikudya hauchanaki nekugezwa katatu kuti uchene.

“Our window panes, fruit trees and vehicles are affected daily.

“We are using vinegar to clean vehicles, and this has affected their original colour.

“We are appealing for help in addressing our concerns because our health is at risk,” said the resident.

Fruit tree leaves and houses are all covered in grey dust.

Some residents cover their vehicles to avoid the dust. Emissions from industrial substances can cause damage to health.

However, it’s not confirmed that emissions from the cement plant can cause health challenges.

The cement plant’s officials said they would respond in due course.
