FAST-RISING Afro-pop musician Macala Macala is already stepping onto the international stage at a remarkably early point in his career, after being unveiled as one of the performers at this year’s Moto Moto Festival. Now in its third edition, the festival is set to take place in Cologne, Germany, on July 25, placing him among a growing list of Zimbabwean artistes carrying their sound beyond local borders.
Macala Macala, born Nigel Landelani Thole, draws inspiration from Mlindo The Vocalist and describes this opportunity as nothing short of a dream realised. Becoming the first artiste from Bulawayo to perform at Moto Moto since its inception is a milestone he does not take lightly. The journey itself carries its own excitement, as this will also mark his first experience of flying and travelling to Europe, something he approaches with both wonder and purpose.
“Moto Moto is a growing festival and an important international platform that is amplifying Zimbabwean talent beyond our borders. It’s truly an honour to be part of it and to represent where I come from on such a stage.
“Of course, it’s my first time travelling internationally and getting on a plane, which is exciting. But for me, it’s really about the music. This is not just about travelling, it’s about going to work, meeting new fans, building networks, and continuing to grow as an artiste,” said Macala Macala.
At just 23, the young musician credits his steady rise to discipline, consistency and an unwavering commitment to his craft. He believes his selection for the festival is not accidental, but rather a reflection of the effort he has invested over time.
“To be part of the festival, I believe it comes down to the quality of my work and consistency. I’ve been putting in the effort, staying dedicated, and working hard. This opportunity is a result of that, and more doors are opening because of my consistency.
“At the event, people should expect fire, authenticity, and something unique and different. Most importantly, they should expect to have fun. I want people to enjoy the music and connect with the energy of my set,” he said.
His journey into the spotlight began in 2023 at the EITA (Eita Filmore High Schools Performing Arts Championships) in Nkulumane, Bulawayo, an event curated by the late Desire Moyoxide Moyo. It was there that his talent first caught attention, eventually leading to a life-changing moment when award-winning musician Mzoe7 spotted him and took him under his wing. That mentorship has played a key role in shaping both his sound and his confidence as a performer.
Hailing from Nkulumane 5, Macala Macala has steadily built his name through a sound that blends originality with influence. His stage name itself is drawn from admiration for Mlindo The Vocalist, inspired by the hit song Macala, a nod that reflects both respect and ambition. His music moves fluidly between Afro-pop, Amapiano and Maskandi, creating a style that feels both rooted and fresh.
He has released a growing catalogue of songs, including Inkumbulo, Amacala, Ncedani and Ngiyakuthanda, each adding to his growing reputation. Along the way, he has also collaborated with notable figures such as Levels from Chillspot, Mr Brown, and a number of Bulawayo-based artistes including Mzoe 7, Thandy Dlana, Mawiza, Copperman and Butholezwe, further cementing his place within the local music scene.
Recently, he released an EP titled Moreblessing, a seven-track project that reflects a range of real-life experiences, touching on emotions and situations that many listeners can relate to in their daily lives. The EP features songs such as Ngiyabonga, Uvalo, Ulele, Mama, Wena, Shela and Ngifuna Wena. He also collaborated with Black Diva on two of the tracks, Uvalo and Ulele, adding further depth to the project.
The Moto Moto Festival itself continues to grow in stature as a cultural platform. Founded in July 2024 by Zimbabwean arts curator Plot Mhako, the event celebrates Zimbabwean and African creativity across music, food, and visual art. Its name, meaning “Fire Fire” in Shona, reflects the energy and spirit it seeks to showcase. Over time, the festival has taken on a larger role in bridging cultures between Africa and Europe, creating space for artistes to gain international exposure.
By its second edition in 2025, the festival had already expanded, attracting a strong audience and featuring established names such as Afro-jazz sensation Feli Nandi and the globally recognised group Mokoomba. Its continued growth has reinforced its position as an important platform for cultural exchange, drawing attention to the richness of Zimbabwean artistic expression.
This year, Macala Macala joins a vibrant line-up that includes Munya Mataruse, Mbeu and the Mhodzi Tribe, Tendai Mavengeni and Shangara Music. More names are expected to be announced as the event approaches, promising an even richer celebration of sound and culture.
For Macala Macala, however, the moment carries a deeply personal meaning. It is not just about taking to an international stage; it is about representing his roots, his journey, and the path he has carved from Nkulumane to Europe — one performance at a time.
