ALICK Macheso is mourning the death of a woman who looked after him in the early ‘80s when he settled in Dzivaresekwa, Harare.
Esthery Chinyani, the wife of legendary music teacher Shepherd Chinyani, died last week.
She succumbed to breast cancer.
“I have lost a loving mother figure who was there for me when I came from the rural areas to Harare,” said Macheso.
“She used to cook and clothe me when I was a nobody.
“Of course, it was Chinyani who accepted me but without her blessings, I don’t think I could have settled in Harare.”
The legendary singer, whose camp discreetly handled a substantial amount of cash as condolence money to the family, urged the Chinyanis to be firm and resolute.
“Such trying times require them to be strong and look to God for help. Alone, they can’t conquer.
“Losing a mother is not easy at all.
“I am always in touch with their sons (Simba and Pyan), who are equally talented.
“I saw them when they were still young and they are respectful. The boys were groomed by a loving and caring father.
“I take them as my own sons because of their respect and love.”
Esthery’s music will continue to influence the local music community.
The outpouring of support from artists like Macheso highlights the deep connections within the industry.
In the coming weeks, tribute concerts and events are likely to be organised to honour Esthery’s memory and celebrate her contributions to the local music scene.
