Macheso rehires drummer

FORMER Extra Kwazvose drummer, Obert Gomba is back at Alick Macheso’s Orchestra Mberikwazvo outfit after dumping the sungura group in 2013.

The dread-locked drummer is no doubt one of the best sungura drummers in Zimbabwe and his return was immediately felt when he was part of Alick Macheso’s entourage that performed at The Platinum on Christmas Day.

Scores of revellers who thronged the popular entertainment venue could not help, but marvel at Gomba’s drum-beating prowess before he exchanged sticks with the outfit’s other drummer, Givemore Chokumanyara later during the night.

Macheso had a good day in office after he managed to attract a full house, something most artistes struggled to do this year.

He belted out all tracks from his forthcoming album, Tsoka Dzerwendo (Ayaya) due to be released in January as well as his yester-year hits such as Shedia and Mundikumbuke.

Although Gomba could not be contacted for comment, Alick Macheso, speaking through his manager, Lucky Macheso, said Gomba had rejoined them and was back for good.

“We are happy with the development. Gomba is back and we are happy to have him. He is a seasoned drummer who has known it all in the sungura industry and his experience will certainly be needed.

He exchanges sticks with Givy (Chokumanyara) and the combination has been awesome,” said the soft-spoken manager.

Gomba together with former Orchestra Mberikwazvo bandsmen, Jonasi Kasamba, Noel Nyazanda and Francis “Slomo” Dhaka unceremoniously left the group in 2013 after irreconcilable differences.
