Sungura king Alick Macheso and dendera king Sulumani Chimbetu, who released albums recently, will invade the town and play at Victoria Falls Primary School. Other artistes billed to play are dancehall maestro Winky D aka Ninja President, rising star Jah Pryzah, gospel diva Fungisai Zvakavapano-
Mashavave, Mbare Chimurenga Choir and dance queen Sandra Ndebele.In an interview, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority head of corporate affairs Mr Sugar Changonda yesterday said Tourism Night would be part of a three-day Victoria Falls Carnival meant to promote the town that will host the 2013 United Nations World Tourism Organisation General Assembly.
“As a precursor to the Victoria Falls Carnival running from December 29-31 2012, we are bringing to the usually quiet resort town of Victoria Falls, a tourism night which will see the crème de le crème in the music industry.
“We are giving this event to the people for free under our theme ‘Tourism for All’, because we do not want to limit the number of people getting into the shows.
“We hope the rare line-up of artistes will give the people something to smile about into the New Year,’’ said Mr Chagonda.
The concert is a fulfilment of the promise made by ZTA chief executive Karikoga Kaseke at the launch of the official countdown of the UNWTO General Assembly in the resort town four months ago.
“It is also in fulfilment of the pledge we made when we launched the official countdown to the UNWTO General Assembly in August and we are walking our talk.
“We hope the people of Victoria Falls and the surrounding areas, will be happy as tourism brings them some of Zimbabwe’s finest artiste who will wind off 2012, and hoist them into 2013 in style,’’ said Mr Chagonda.
The Tourism Night has become a national brand after ZTA successfully held another such event which was attended by an estimated 40 000 in Gwanzura Stadium in October.
“We are very happy because over the years the Tourism Night has proved a unifying force, bringing together Zimbabweans in their broad totality,’’ said Mr Chagonda.
Since Zimbabwe won the bid to host the 2013 UNWTO General Assembly in Victoria Falls, the resort town has become the epicentre of many events.
