Even at last weekend’s Unity Gala in Gokwe, the demand for the overalls was high with presenters of the show — Prominence Makaya, Thabani Gambiza, Elsie Mojapelo, Hazvinei Sakarombe and Kanyemba Bonzo — donning the designer overalls.
Alick Macheso and Roki were some of the few musicians who popularised the overalls courtesy of Zimbabwe Entrepreneurship Youth Action under a project called “Youth Building Zimbabwe Hovhorosi Style”.
According to the designers — Herbert Huruva and James Pande — the overalls were born out of the desire to honour President Mugabe, as one of Africa’s icons.
“We want to pay tribute to a living legend, President Mugabe, for his dedication towards empowering the Zimbabwean youths and generations to come.
“Another important aspect of the project was to conscientise the youths not just in Zimbabwe but across the world about the role of our President in championing African pride.
“We want to show that we take pride in our national flag colours and this is why the overalls have been made in different colours of our flag,” Pande, who is the ZEYA vice-president, said.
He said their Facebook page was inundated with orders from people who are as far as Australia, South Africa and the United States.
His co-designer Huruva, who is also the ZEYA national chairman, reiterated that the business has contributed towards employment of the youths who sale the “hovhorosi”.
“We are happy that these overalls have given people value for their money because the President’s signature is a brand and everyone wants to be associated with big brands,” Huruva said.
“The demand is high and many youths are eking out a living from the sale of the designer overalls,” Huruva said.
He, however, said they were seeking for more funding to increase production since demand was growing.
