SUNGURA kingpin Alick Macheso will this Friday stage his first show in Bulawayo this year at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre where fans are expected to sample tracks from his 10th album.Macheso is rumoured to have recorded some of the tracks from the much awaited album which is expected in April.
In an interview, Cheso Power manager William Tsandukwa said the sungura maestro was ready to dazzle is Bulawayo fans.
“We have a lot of new stuff and dances so people should come in their numbers and see what we have packaged for them this year. People will sample about three or four tracks from our forthcoming album provided there won’t be people recording with ipads and phones. It’s a precaution because we fear people will pirate the album before its release like they have done to a number of artistes of late,” said Tsandukwa.
Baba Sharo, as the musician is fondly known by his legion of fans, would be backed by his Orchestra Mberikwazvo band. Tsandukwa dispelled claims that Macheso was ‘finished’ as many critics claimed following the release of his last album Kwatabva Mitunhu (Kure KweKure) which did not do well on the market.
“Macheso is still vibrant, anotopera abiwa Macheso wacho, people should come to the show and witness for themselves that he is still the sungura master,” he said.
On the posters advertising the gig, Macheso is seen sporting a suit and a number of fans are curious to know whether the sungura maestro was coming up with a new style.
Said Tsandukwa with laughter: “Macheso now has a son-in-law so he cannot be wearing jeans anymore like the young boys, amunhu mukuru saka zvema jean zvasara”. (he is now a grown up man and he has outgrown the jeans.)
Macheso’s daughter, Sharon was customarily married to Kudakwashe Munetsi earlier this month. Macheso demanded $12 000 as lobola from Munetsi who is based in South Africa.
The collapse of Last Power Studios, co-owned by Macheso and Laston Murehwa, has been attributed to the rescheduling of the recording of Macheso’s latest project to a later date.
The fallout between the two also meant that Macheso had to find a new studio to record his album. This prompted him to set up his own studio, Zorai Butter Studios.
The studio is expected to start operating in April.
Macheso is the architect of successful dances that include the famous Zora Butter, Borrowdale, Razor Wire, Slow Motion, Tora Bute, Yambongo and Kochekera.
