AFRO-FUSION musician, Ranson Madzamba, whose stock continues to rise, feels honored that his work is being appreciated after he was recently nominated for the Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA).

Popularly known as Mazarura, the talented wordsmith was nominated in the Best Traditional (Chimurenga/Chinyakare) category.

He will battle it out against Brity Yonly, Mary Anibal and Othnell Mangoma Moyo.

The event will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 7Arts Theatre in Avondale, Harare.

Mazarura, in an interview this week, was buoyant that he will come out tops.

“This is indeed an honour. Although I am working very hard and putting some extra effort to ensure that my fans get polished compositions, this one came as a surprise.

“This is my first nomination and I am excited that the majority of Zimbabweans are appreciating my work. The songs ‘Africa’, ‘Perekedza anokuda’, ‘Wakandikoshera’, ‘Tochema Magamba’ and ‘Vision 2030 Tinosvika/Siyafik are trending and are being appreciated more than I expected.

“For me, this year is for collaborations. I also expect to broaden my fan base by having regional and international tours. This recognition will propel me to dizzy heights and it is encouraging to note that my work is appealing to various people across the country,” he said.

The song ‘Tochema magamba’ is one of Mazarura’s most popular and well-crafted tunes.

The song, released in 2021, is a fusion of traditional and contemporary instruments such as mbira, congas and the acoustic guitar.

It is a Pan-African song in which he honors the gallant sons and daughters of the soil who fought the Chimurenga.

Mazarura also pays tribute to musicians who unified the nation through art such as Soul Jah Love and Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi.

The gifted mbira player has toured and performed in Asia and has been marketing his music globally.

His road to stardom started in 2009 at Midlands State University when he would attend mbira playing sessions for Music and Musicology students at the institution.

Some of his danceable songs include ‘Pamusoroi’, ‘Vari mudande’ and ‘Hanya Nani’.
