A local member of the Johanne Masowe yeChishanu church, Madzibaba Elisha Ruhinga, 46, from St Mary’s, Chitungwiza, appeared in court on Saturday, facing serious allegations of cyberbullying.

Madzibaba Elisha is accused of publicly insulting and defaming Madzibaba Moses Gwasarira, alleging that he misappropriated church donations and stole from his followers under the guise of prayer.

The State claims that in a viral video, the accused falsely accused the complainant of embezzling US$2.6 million from church members and threatened to recover the money “by hook or by crook.” He also shared another video where he accused the complainant of pouring acid on a church member’s head.

These allegations have caused substantial emotional distress for Madzibaba Moses, who reported feeling harassed and bullied as a result of the accused’s social media posts.

Madzibaba Elisha was remanded in custody until today, for a bail hearing.

The State, represented by Dzidzai Josiah, opposed bail, arguing that the accused poses a flight risk.

Josiah noted that when police identified themselves, Madzibaba Elisha attempted to flee, leading to a chase and physical confrontation during his arrest.

“Upon arrest, the accused attempted to assault the two police officers,” Josiah stated. “He was subdued only after a scuffle.”

Outside the court, several church members wearing white regalia rallied against cyberbullying, holding placards to express their support for Madzibaba Moses.

Among them were Madzibaba Owen Chingondi and other senior leaders, with Madzibaba Moses serving as the national chairperson of Vapositori for Economic Development, and Madzibaba Owen as the chairperson for the Harare Metropolitan Province.
