CAPS United are reportedly considering changes to their goalkeeping department during the mid-season transfer window.
Sources close to the club have indicated that first-choice goalkeeper Wallace Magalane could be among the players to make way following a string of costly errors that have coincided with the Green Machine’s fading Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title challenge.
The Harare giants started the campaign strongly and were among the early pacesetters, but inconsistent performances in recent weeks have seen them steadily lose ground on league leaders Scottland.
Defensive lapses and dropped points have left Makepekepe facing an uphill task to revive their championship ambitions in the second half of the season.
A club source told this publication that Magalane’s future is under review as the technical team looks to strengthen the squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.
“Nothing has been finalised yet, but the club is assessing all departments. The goalkeeper’s position is one of the areas under discussion, and there is a possibility of movement during the transfer window,” said the source.
Magalane has produced several impressive saves this season but has also been at the centre of a number of high-profile mistakes that have directly resulted in goals, leaving supporters divided over whether he should remain the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Frustration among sections of the CAPS United faithful has reached boiling point.
“This Magalane madness has been going on for too long now. If he is included in the first XI in our next fixture, then we’re going to take action from the stands,” said supporter Tevez Mukepeke.
However, others have rallied behind the goalkeeper, urging supporters not to abandon him during a difficult spell.
“Magalane, I hope you bounce back soon. Yes, we get angry as supporters, but at the end we are human beings. All the best,” wrote Kudakwashe Mushangwe.
Another supporter, Lionel Sibanda, added: “It shall be well.”
Tea Chinyundo also offered words of encouragement, saying, “Up, up Magalane, it shall come to pass. We will get back to our best. One love.”
The mixed reactions reflect a fan base frustrated over repeated mistakes and sympathy for a player whose confidence appears to have been dented by recent performances.
Coach Takesure Chiragwi has previously acknowledged that individual errors have proved costly, describing one of the goals conceded against ZPC Kariba as a “big blunder.”
With the transfer window approaching, CAPS United’s hierarchy now face important decisions as they seek to arrest their slide and close the widening gap on Scottland.
