POLITICIAN Fadzayi Mahere was yesterday convicted and fined US$500 for publishing falsehoods.
The falsehoods emanate from a tweet in which she said a policeman had beaten to death a baby strapped to its mother’s back.
The CCC spokesperson was charged with publishing falsehoods prejudicial to the State.
She was found guilty by regional magistrate, Taurai Manuwere, after a full trial and ordered to pay a fine of US$500 or three months in jail.
In his judgment, magistrate Manuwere ruled that Mahere undermined the authority of the police and her actions were detrimental to the law enforcement agency.
He said she should have verified whether the baby had died or not before tweeting and lying that the police had beaten the child to death.
Sheila Mupindu prosecuted.
