A 24-YEAR-OLD woman was arraigned before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court for stealing cash, clothes and other valuables from her employer before vanishing from the place.
Mazvita Njanike Kapfumvuti appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Perseverance Makala, facing charges of violating Section 113 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.
Prosecutor, Ms Deliwe Masibera said on January 15, Kapfumvuti, who was employed as a domestic worker by Ms Marian Chiwenga, stole US$500 and R2 000 respectively.
Kapfumvuti professed ignorance when Chiwenga asked about the money that had gone missing from the house.
However, she later confessed about the theft and indicated that she had replaced the money, but only R300 was recovered.
“At round 10am the same day, Chiwenga noticed that Kapfumvuti had ran away and had stolen a suitcase, travel bag, a pair of skin jeans, a pair of sandals, two skirts, two skin tights, two top blouses, two baby blankets, two school uniforms, four blankets, four pairs of trousers and four curtains,” said Ms Masibera.
Mr Masibera said on May 25, Chiwenga received a tip-off about the accused person`s whereabouts.

“Chiwenga reported to the police, leading to Kapfumvuti’s arrest. A suitcase, travel bag, a pair of skin jeans, a pair of sandals, two top blouses and two skirts were recovered upon her arrest,” she said.
The total value stolen was US$500, R2 000 and clothes worth US$333. Only R300 and clothes worth US$35 were recovered.
Kapfumvuti was sentenced to 18 months in prison, with six months being suspended on condition that she pays restitution, and another six months suspended on condition that she does not commit a similar offence.
She will effectively serve the remaining six months.
