A HARARE housemaid has appeared in court for allegedly stealing US$500 from her employer and hiding the cash in a maize field under a rock.

Rejoice Chikwadze (29) appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo, facing theft charges. She pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.

The complainant is Mr Victor Tibugare, an administrator employed by a company offering funeral services.

Prosecutor Mr Takudzwa Jambawu told the court that on May 7, Chikwadze allegedly devised a plan to steal money from the complainant.

The court heard that she allegedly took advantage of the complainant’s absence to search through a bag before stealing US$500 and concealing the cash away from the house.

On May 9, the complainant discovered that the money was missing and filed a report at ZRP Highlands.

Detectives from CID Highlands were assigned to investigate the matter. Chikwadze was later apprehended and admitted to having committed the offence during questioning.

She led detectives to a maize field, several hundred metres from the complainant’s residence, where the cash had been hidden beneath a rock inside a small plastic bag.

The stolen money was recovered in full.
