Majome reassignment above board — AG

The reassignment of Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission chairperson Ms Jessie Majome to the Public Service Commission is constitutionally sound and should not be confused with removal from office, Attorney‑General Mrs Virginia Mabiza has said.

Mrs Mabiza, who is the Government’s chief legal adviser, said President Mnangagwa was well within his constitutional authority to move Ms Majome from the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission to a new role as a commissioner in the Public Service Commission, dismissing claims that the move was unconstitutional.

She said commentary suggesting that the reassignment breached the Constitution was misleading and failed to properly consider critical legal distinctions within Zimbabwe’s governance framework.

“There is no doubt that, within our constitutional context, reassignment and removal from office are two different things. Reassignment typically entails a change in responsibilities or posting, while removal from office usually implies a more serious action, often arising from gross misconduct or incapacity,” said Mrs Mabiza.

The Attorney‑General said Ms Majome’s reassignment was carried out in full compliance with the  law.

She also noted that this was not the first time Ms Majome had been reassigned, pointing out that she was previously transferred from the Zimbabwe Anti‑Corruption Commission (ZACC) to the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission.
